How To Flatten a Rug Corner

How To Flatten a Rug Corner

Is your area rug curling up at the corners? Whether it’s a brand-new rug or one that’s seen better days, knowing how to flatten those pesky corners can save you time and frustration. It’s completely normal for rugs to become curled, wrinkled, or misshapen over time. Here are 5 simple DIY methods to help restore your area rug to its original shape.

Flip the Rug

After unrolling a new roll, it may have curled corners even after hours of the rug relaxing flat on the floor. In this case, if the corners roll upwards, fold them slightly under and leave them alone for a couple of days. Although, if they are curling under, you’ll want to flip the rug over and curl the corners under. You can also weight down each corner with a heavy item (books, furniture, etc.), this will help flatten out the rug and force the fibers to relax.

Tape Down the Rug

For a faster alternative to flatten out your rug, purchase double-sided carpet tape. Apply the tape to the back side of the rug so the tape adheres to the floor and holds in the rug in place with no folded corners. This option is great because it works immediately and on all flooring but it does require a purchase.

Lay the Rug in the Sun

Lay your rug out on a clean concrete or asphalt surface outdoors on a warm, sunny day. The best temperature range is between 75°F and 80°F, as the ground will have absorbed the sun’s heat by then. Allowing the rug to sit in direct sunlight for a bit is usually enough to smooth out any creases or wrinkles.

Back-Roll the Rug

Start by unrolling your area rug, then roll it back up in the opposite direction to help counteract the curl. If this method doesn’t work immediately, leave the rolled rug for a day or two before unrolling it again in the opposite direction. This option is great because you don’t need any supplies, but may take a couple of days to see results.

Use a Hair Dryer

Use a hairdryer to gently heat the back of the rug and loosen any creases. Keep the hairdryer about 6 to 9 inches away from the rug to avoid damaging the fibers. Move the dryer in a sweeping motion on a low to medium setting, rather than keeping it focused in one spot.
