Natural, DIY carpet cleaner!

Household DIY carpet cleaner

To extend the life of your homes rug, there are times when a light spot clean is in order. We know at Persia Oriental Rugs that a full serviced cleaning isn’t always necessary when a quick, light spot clean can do the job. When considering cleaning agents, some options contain chemicals which may present a potential hazard to pets or small children. With that being said, we put together a quick, safe, Do-it-yourself solution for small spot stain removal.

Ingredients

For this carpet cleaner, you will need the following:

  • White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Lemon Essential Oil
  • An old towel or rug

Instructions

  1. Take a few drops of Lemon Essential oil and mix it in with the baking soda. This mixture should still resemble baking soda. If it begins to look like a paste, you have added to much essential oil. Take this mixture and sprinkle it over a specific spot or an area of the rug. We recommend letting this sit overnight but if that’s not an option, anywhere from 2-4 hours should do the trick.
  2. Make an even ratio of White Vinegar and Water into a Spray Bottle. You then want to spray the area covered in baking soda. Upon spraying, the area will begin to fizz.
  3. When the fizzing starts to slow down, apply the towel to the area. Generally, it’s best to press down on the stain as opposed to scrubbing the area. Scrubbing can push the stain further into the rug.
  4. If the stain persists, repeating this process can help. If after a few times the stain remains, give us a call at Persian Rug and we would be happy to professionally clean or restore the rug.

This formula is not guaranteed to remove all stains. The advantage of this recipe is the fact it is all natural and uses little to no chemicals. As mentioned above, this is a great method if there are pets or small children crawling on the rug. Another advantage is the addition of Essential Lemon Oil. The Essential oil isn’t required in this recipe, but it adds a level of fragrance and helps with any old, stale smells. If the stain persists, give us a call and we can walk through the best options for your rug!
