Why You Should Use a Rug Pad

Why You Should Use a Rug Pad

So you’ve just bought a brand new authentic rug for your home, congratulations! But before you place it in it’s room, you might want to consider one more step. Purchasing and using a Rug pad is one of the best ways to save your hardwood floor scratches, as well as extend the life of your Persian or Oriental rug for years to come.

How Do Rug Pads Work?

As we mentioned earlier, rug pads have two main functions. They minimize scratches on your floor and extend the life of your rug. So how do they work? Rug pads work by keeping your rug in place, keep it from slipping around, and by providing a soft barrier between the rug and the floor. This added cushion and grip is what will keep your rug and floor in the best possible condition.

How Should I Size a Rug Pad?

When choosing the right size for your rug pad, first and foremost consider the size of the rug. While you don’t want them to be exactly the same size, the rug pad should be just smaller than the rug itself by a few inches all around. Depending on the type of rug pad, you might be able to trim it to the proper size for your rug.

Which Material Should I Choose?

Most rug pads are made of either felt, rubber, or even a mixture of both. Depending on the type of rug you have, you might want a pad that is more cushion or more grip. As you might’ve guessed, the rubber provides the rug with grip and prevents slipping, and the felt acts as the cushion. Feel free to first try the rug without a pad and gauge from there if you’d like more cushion, grip, or both.

When Should I Replace My Rug Pad?

Rug pads don’t last forever, and it’s never a bad idea to replace it or adjust it if you find you’d like more grip, cushion, or your previous one is simply getting dirty and compressed down over time. While you can clean a rug pad, they aren’t very expensive so you’re probably better just replacing it.
