While you don’t want them to be exactly the same size, the rug pad should be just smaller than the rug itself by a few inches all around. Depending on the type of rug pad, you might be able to trim it to the proper size for your rug. 

Which Material Should I Choose?

Rug pads don’t last forever, and it’s never a bad idea to replace it or adjust it if you find you’d like more grip, cushion, or your previous one is simply getting dirty and compressed down over time. While you can clean a rug pad, they aren’t very expensive so you’re probably better just replacing it.
